OSHA Enacts New Regulations

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's new ergonomics regulations require employers to educate workers about on-the-job risks, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and back strain - and to encourage them to report symptoms.

That's all that's required - unless a worker complains about an injury. Then a slew of other rules kicks in to address any musculoskeletal disorders. If a worker reports symptoms, the employer must determine whether they are result of a related injury and, if so, determine whether the job involves ergonomic risk factors. If such risk factors are present, companies may have to develop a comprehensive ergonomics program that involves training, fixing job hazards, decreasing worker duty, or even granting time off. October 15th is the deadline for implementation.
